ddw,
Big camera stores that make their money selling cameras aren't the same as the little specialty camera stores that sell new and used, and have a wall of used lenses, flashes, tripods, reflectors, etc.
I do business with Arlington Camera in Arlington, Texas. They're not the same as your big box camera stores that do the big advertising. Big retail stores don't see value in your cameras because they can't be bothered to hire people who know about old cameras and who will take the time to deal with the used items and the specialized customers who are looking for them. They don't want their capital tied up in slower moving inventory.
Both jimmyt and ddw--Check around for little hole-in-the-wall used camera stores. Call your local college and ask them where their photographers go to get camera parts, developing, etc. There are ways to find these places. Ask those businesses. And if nothing else, email the folks at Arlington Camera and ask if they can make any recommendations to you regarding the valuation and sale of your camera, and tell them one of their regular customers told you to check. I don't know if you want to start shipping camera gear back and forth for an appraisal and offer, but who knows.
Good luck. Don't let anyone tell you it isn't worth anything. It is, but not to the population at large. There are enough photographers still out here using SLRs that you'll find a buyer.
