The organist is a twit. Whether this sort of twittery is widespread or not, I don't know, but at the church I attend with some regularity (Lutheran—ELCA), music is music. The organist (who also plays concert-quality piano) plays a whole variety of stuff during services (Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi, a bit of jazz now and then . . . ), and the choir has sung just about everything from medieval plainchant through Bach, through Mozart, through Schubert (as in Ave Maria), through African chant (and for a staid bunch of Swedes and Norwegians, does that place rock!!).

I think it was John Wesley who, when bitched at because he was setting hymns he was writing to currently popular melodies, said, "Why should the devil have all the best tunes?"

I repeat:   the organist is a twit!
