I guess everyone has to make their own decisions, McGrath, but after a while, I found doing volunteer sound tech work at musical events to be too stressful and thankless for the amount of effort it required, and I just stopped volunteering. It's not uncommon for the volunteers to be the bottom rung on the ladder and be treated as having less value than everyone else, as well as being a pressure valve for both the performers and the event organizers. These days I find it much more satisfying to pay an entry fee than to be a volunteer at music festivals. And that's a shame, because many music festivals absolutely depend on the help of volunteers to survive at all.
