They seem pretty sensible guidelines to me, and they match what I have always understood to be the law already.

You're entitled to do what seems necessary at the time to defend yourself and your property, but you can't set out to get some kind of revenge, and that seems right to me.

Back in the 18th century landowners used to set mantraps in their grounds to catch and cripple or kill poachers and suchlike. Eventually it was decided that that kind of thing wasn't to be tolerated, and that's the basis of the current law which lies behind these guidlines.

I get nervous at the thought that there are seemingly civilised and decent people who really get off on the idea of having a legal excuse to hurt or even kill other fellow human beings.
