3 and a half true stories from Alaska:
Back in the 80's some high school seniors were playing one of those graduation pranks by gathering items on a list, not necessarily legally, they were in front of a furniture store gathering in an advertising balloon (big thing about six foot long, shaped like a blimp). Owner was inside with the lights out, came blazing out with a pistol and sent bullets into their departing pickup (and a nearby inn), killed one of the kids. People writing into the newspapers seemed to be evenly split as to whether it was justifiable. He got sent away for a couple years and came back early for good behavior.
In mid '03 there were burglaries all over Big Lake. The Pastor of one of the local churches walked in early in the morning to find two guys who'd been pilfering the church basement running at him. I believe he actually discharged his pistol into their backs as they ran out, he was arraigned on Manslaughter charges and the jury found him not guilty.
A co-worker heard strange noises in his house of a fall evening, and came downstairs ready to shoot, at the very last moment he realized it was his daughter unexpectedly home from college. In retrospect he holds her responsible and hasn't changed his habits.
I won't go into the pistol that was packed into an innocent older woman's luggage by her nephew without her knowledge and discharged while the plane was inflight, sending a bullet into a nappy sack. It didn't kill anyone.
