In Minnesota, I think they've tried spreading urea crystals on the streets instead of salt, the advantage being that urea doesn't cause cars to rust, and doesn't kill grass, trees, and other vegetation. I don't remember hearing how the experiment turned out, though, so I don't know if they still do it.
