Thread Name: BS: Spatulence
Subject: RE: BS: Spatulence
Okay, here's my take on the spatula phenomenon, and I'm the one that started the damned mess.

When I started the "How Many Spatulas Do YOU Own???" thread, I was looking for the most absurdly mundane, unromantic, innocuous, bland and unexciting thing I could think of to base a thread upon. I mean almost everybody has a spatula... or a dozen... or three dozen. Nobody ever pays any attention to them.

Spatulas are kind of like your own name. You take your name for granted and never pay much attention to it. But, if you say your own name over and over again it eventually becomes a meaningless sound and you say to yourself, "Ya know, 'Bruce' (That's my name. You can insert your own name in its place. Unless your name is Bruce.) is really a stupid word. Why in the world did my parents name me that? What in the hell is a 'Bruce' anyway?" At that point, the idea of one's name shifts from being part of one's reality to being a surreal concept.

It appears that, for a handful of Mudcatters, an analogous phenomenon has occurred with the idea of a spatula and/or the word "spatula". "Spatula" no longer refers to a mundane cooking utensil. It now refers to an as yet poorly defined surrealistic concept. The aim of all the spatula threads is to uncover the true nature of that new concept and to redefine "spatula" in light of that new understanding.

I know this is pretty heavy stuff, so if you'd like to go lie down now, I understand.

Now, is there anyone who still needs to know why this is called the "BS" section?
