If I ever get my books unpacked, I'll find my copy of Carl Sandburg's Rutabaga Stories. He had a marvelous feel for language, and if I have any at all, it began with that book. "Never kick a slipper at the moon, not if the moon is a dancing slipper moon. Not if the ends of the moon are fixed like the toe and the heel of a dancer's foot."
