I get along fine with vernier calipers with a dial guage, thanks to Lee Valley and lots of practice on things like strings, hardware, wood joints and such. You should be able to get "in the ball park" enough to make an informed purchase. Sure, a micrometer is better, but use what you can get. Good luck!
