Sonnet 24/01/04                     DCCCLXXIV

Only desire keeps me looking at time
As more than toil and trial. It is my dreams
That feed the future, and my hopes that climb
Toward the heavens. All of past now seems
To fall away, leaving heart free to care:
Yet, is there chance to hold to hope, when years
Cannot just be ignored? How can I share
These dreams, and not recall to mind my fears?
Only the thought of muse gives hope, for more
Than sleep and labor. She gives dreams the light
To see beyond bare plodding life, to core
Of soul: The thought of her keeps future bright.
I shall keep dreaming, though hope may be vain:
Regrets are nothing to what I might gain.
