In Pete's book (Where Have All The Flowers Gone) he relates the story of how he found the words on the back of a restaurant menu in Wisconsin and since has found evidence that it goes back at least to WW1. He also includes an alternative last verse and chorus that was went to him by Eleanor Walden.
