Sonnet 23/02/04                     DCCCLXXXI

Forgive my melancholy, and the tears
That cold and lonely nights now form. I try
To let dreams warm me, but I find that fears
Oft overtake desire: For hope I cry.
Forgive the shadows on my soul, that mask
The happiness I find in dream of you.
I cannot change the past, or memories ask
To not have been: Heart is to passions true.
Forgive presumption that you want my heart
To be placed at your feet, or that I hold
Some charm to ease your mind. Verse has not art
To send more than the thoughts that dreams have told.
I ask forgiveness, but I know I seek
Far more to hear the soft words you might speak.
