Yes - go for it ! Get a group of friends together, do some devised work around a particular theme, get it set, book a really cheap performing space (or first of all your college drama studio one lunchtime for free, maybe ??) Getting stuck into everything you can is going to give you the kind of CV that people will look at twice.

Did you have a look at the Rose Bruford 3-year course ? I know that they do take on more than 2 people a year ! (but not as many as on their acting course). Another great source of advice and information for you will be The Directors' Guild of Great Britain
