Well, at the famous pulling down of Saddam's statue there was a little crowd of western journalists and Iraqis at the end of a great, huge square that was mostly empty. By filming with only close-up shots, the media gave the impression that there was a huge celebratory crowd of Iraqis gathering there to cheer the fall of the statue, but that was not the case.
On TV what is shown is shown in a way specifically designed to carry the message that the owners of the TV station wish to convey. I'm sure the Nazis were also able to show films of cheering crowds of happy people praising the Werhmacht as it stormed into and "liberated" various European nations in WWII! And as a matter of fact, there WERE such cheering crowds in many places...the Ukraine comes to mind (they figured the Germans would be a big improvement over Stalin).
In any divided populace, you can always get some people to come out and cheer the invader or the victor of an internal political struggle...even if Satan himself were to ride in on the lead tank, complete with red suit, horns, and pitchfork. Then you just film those people...and show it to the folks at home...and everybody celebrates. :-)
My above remarks are intended more as a comment on the function of propaganda in modern media than as a comment on the current situation in Lebanon, which I don't have much of an opinion on at this point...I don't know enough about it yet to justify having a strong opinion.
