I was once present at what the Brisbane Media called a Riot!

Dear 'Uncle Joh' - our Qld Premier who had been a persistent anti-intellectual was to be given an honorary Doctorate by Qld Uni.

Many people - about 300 or so, came out of the woodwork to have a look at this in person - I saw people I hadn't seen in years! A few enthusiastic people started banging on the windows of Mayne Hall - very well designed with big chunks of glass that were about 6-9 feet wide and as high as the building was - several stories. They set up resonance in the glass - and they started to crack - incidentally they were all later replaced with multiple panes!

Word came that his nibs was here - the police started to scurry round like Oozleuem Birds - so we all moved well away from the building. Amazingly there was now a squirming little knot of about 23-40 people each trying to hide behind someone else - most of whom had been the most vocal!!!

A shout went up from our crowd - "Now we know who the Special Branch are!!!". When his nibs turned up and tried to get in the door he could not because of this little crowd! Which was played endlessly on TV as evidence of the riot! It was just journalists, Special Branch Police, etc!!!!

The image I shall always remember is a man with his very young son on his shoulders dancing around to the chanting to the crowd - Shame Shame or Go home Joh, or whatever! The kid was laughing its head off!
