I'd expect it to be a modern song, perhaps based on the metre of one of Hogg's less successful romantic effusions. "Guest" probably has the right idea mentioning Gaberlunzie and the Corries, both of whom perpetrated some pretty embarrassing modern songs on this kind of subject; though, to their credit, probably not this one.
