Art, I will look up Paul Durst. You said, I envy you if you are, as you sound, at the beginning. I've written about a dozen historical songs - a few of which I'm very happy with - and I like to think that that's just a beginning.

And as long as we're talking about how to write the songs once the info is acquired, I like what Willie-O told me once: "Remember you're not testifying in court." One way I've found to resist the temptation to stuff everything I know into a song is to write more than one song about the same topic, or at least keep in mind that I always have the option of doing so.
