Thread Name: Lyr Req: Fortune / Once I Had a Fortune
Subject: Lyr Add: Lyr Req: Fortune Lyrics?
As I recall it from an unknown banjo pickin group in Boston some years ago:
FORTUNE (ONCE I HAD A FORTUNE)
Once I had a fortune, kept it in my trunk,
Lost it all in gambling, one night when I got drunk.
CHO: Fortune, I had it, fortune, I lost it,
Fortune, I lost it, one night when I got drunk.
When I had money, I had friends all around,
Now I have no money, no friends can be found.

Below are some verses I wrote to prolong it:
All my gold and silver, I kept it for my life,
If I had it still, boys, I'd marry myself a wife.
But now I have not got it, I have no kind of life,
I lay in a broken bed, and eat with a broken knife.
Day into night, and night into day,
In drinkin' and gamblin' I weared my life away.
If I had the money that I have once had
I'd lay around easy, and never be sad
Come all you fly fellers, take warning and see
Your fortune will leave you, just like mine left me
I've told you my story, I've no more to say,
I'll drink one more whiskey, and be on my way.
