"To Wong Foo, From Julie Newmar" was an excellent movie of that type, with Wesley Snipes & Patrick Swayze starred in. It is meant to be hunourous and is usually a great send-up, but there is also a poignancy to it, which brings a bit of melancholy. It is part a flaunting in the face of staid, conservatism; part just plain campy fun; and part, IMHO, a desire to express oneself differently. Then there are the ones who do itf or a living because it is what they are good at, regardless of their sexual preference. BBC had an excellent series called Soho Stories which, over the course of several shows, followed the career of Danny, who was gorgeous either way. He wanted to get out of it and do acting, whcih he did get to do, but he was most successful as a drag queen singer. It really was a very good documentary.
