There is a big distinction to be made between 'secular' and 'free' when it comes to Syria. Syria works via "Hama Rules" as noted in my earlier post. When you have a dictatorship, all you need is a change in dictators and presto chango you are now something else entirely, for instance, Iran which went from secular to Islamofundy in a heartbeat.
