He definitely has something in a camp, spaced out way, and he can write an interesting song and sing it well. The thing is, I can't imagine myself (or maybe anyone else) taking the trouble to learn any of the songs that I have heard him sing to date, which makes it hard for me to consider them as "folk" songs.

It's not homophobia - I fear him not, nor yet his lifestyle. Just not my choice of material. Doesn't mean it's not good, though.
