van lingle reminded me of another group of "lazy" Mexicans who used to gather on a street corner at 4:30 AM and wait for construction crews to go by and hopefully pick them for today's job. I said "Good morning" to them one day and you would have thought I had given them the world - simple respect and acknowledgement that they exist. They live in rental houses (warehouses really) in Jackson Heights. These are one and two family homes that have been converted into cells big enough for a single bed. 10 - 12 men share a basement, a bath and cook on hot plates. The money goes home to Mexico to families desperate for it. The fire department dreads what they know will be a disaster when a row of these houses goes up in flames.

As to language - if the children cannot attend school without the risk of deportaion, how the hell are they supposed to learn Engish which their parents know is their ticket out of poverty? The politically active Mexicans who demand bi-lingual doctors, teachers, etc. are fighting to remedy the problem not prolong it. Sorry tarheel - Mexicans are not guilty as charged. But there are other groups that are. Keep digging and find another minority to abuse.
