In the UK I worked as a volunteer teaching English to a Turkish Kurd. She was one of the few in her community who wanted to learn English. The majority of her friends were just not interested as they lived in an area where there was a large group of Turkish Kurds and saw no need to try and get to know the local population. Gulustan, who I was teaching, despaired of their atitude, but even her husband felt the same way.

Imn my job, dealing with motor accident claims, I often came upon clients who did not speak any English, despite having been in the UK for a number of years. We had one hell of a job trying to deal with their claims and often had to resort to interpreters.

Trust me, a lot of them DO NOT WANT to become involved with the English because of what they see as the lax culture and mores.
