Interestingly, artbrooks, I have a friend whose family has been living in what is now New Mexico, USA, for more than 400 years. They don't consider themselves Mexicans, though, even though they were Mexican citizens before they were US citizens. My friend says she is "Hispanic". She says that her family immigrated to what is now New Mexico, USA, from Spain, so that makes them Hispanic Americans.
