Among numbers to be routinely disbelieved, sizes of demonstrations are right up there with circulations, cock lengths, and church membership statistics. To get a rough guess, take the geometric mean of the figures given by the organizers & by the police. If you are actually there, and can get high enough to see the whole crowd, count the people in a imaginary square near you & then estimate the number of such squares to cover the crowd. If everybody marches along one parade route, you can count the people who pass in a minute & time the parade from beginning to end.
