Rapaire is alas, wrong. It was true when human beings were not so plentiful and so powerful. The politicians and the apathetic citizenry can now wreck great swaths of the natural world, change the climate, dam up all the rivers. Look at hunks of the Appalachians in Kentucky and West Virginia, and tell me that the mountains will last forever after the mining companies have gotten through with them.

What is left of nature may recover in a few million years, for whatever comfort that is.
