Sonnet 17/09/04                           CMXXXI

Where can I find reason for hope, save thought
Of your sweet smile? World does not give me cause
To dream of passions, nor has labor brought
The satisfaction that would longings pause.
How can I hold to heart's desire, when arms
Find no one to encircle? Should I find
One near at hand, but lacking of the charms
That fill this heart, and dreams to my muse bind?
What can I change of life, to alter fate,
That I might balance reach? I cannot turn
From what words might of longing for you state:
You touch one who must all love's lessons learn.
Is there but chance that hope might be, and all
Will be as dream? Heart must for it's muse fall.
