Thread Name: African American Spirituals Bibliography
Subject: INTRODUCTION
1 February, 2007
This PermaThread™ is part of the Mudcat African American Spirituals PermaThread™ project, and is a work in progress intended as a bibliography for Spirituals (songbooks and commentaries). Feel free to post messages in this thread, but please note that we reserve the right to edit or delete all messages here, so that this thread will serve as a permament reference. Note also that replies to posted questions or comments may appear within your post, instead of as new posts. This PermaThread™ is edited by Susan Hinton (WYSIWYG) and Q

This PermaThread™ was originally intended/titled as an Index of African American Spirituals In Print. The goal was a comprehensive index (by song title), so that versions and variants for individual songs could easily be compared. This proved unworkable in a threaded format, so the thread has been re-purposed. Existing posts are quite unorganized at the moment! ~SH~

.

This project includes historical materials that may contain offensive language or negative stereotypes reflecting the culture or language of a particular period or place. These items are presented as part of the historical record. ~S~

A few thoughts about how we will approach the massive amount of work to organize Q's wonderful work in the balance of this thread...

My own time to work on laying out and updating this thread will be limited-- about an hour a day, and interrupted often by life-responsibilities I am not in a position to foresee. It will be necessary for me to leave myself a lot of notes in here, so I don't lose track of what I'm doing and where we're heading. I'll need to keep it real, real simple, and take it in baby steps, so it's not so overwhelming I can't think straight enough to do a good job. I anticipate doing some of the organizing in a word processor.

I also anticpiate having a LOT of questions about the work!! Although I will mostly address my questions to Q, I welcome other's participation as well. You'll usually find my answers to new posts in small green text within your new post. I'll delete questions and answers periodically. If you are addressing an existing post, it will help me follow your thinking if you let me know which date/time's post you're addressing-- something like this:

Re: Q's 05 May 05 - 11:25 PM post:

(Song in America--to 1850) "Song in America, from Early Times to about 1850," Yerbury, Grace D., 1971, 305 pp., The Scarecrow Press. Not Seen

I HAVE seen that, and what I can say about it is......

Is all that OK?
