I remember it sung by Peter Dawson so that is going back to the '30s or '40s. He also sang 'Glorious Devon'.
Ken Dodd does an hilarious version whic involves shooting the drummer in the pit orchestra, and the ' Figure I knew, I saw quite plain' produces the added identification of 'It was Nelly from the Chip shop!'
