I think Jack Armstrong's band was usually the Barnstormers. The Cheviot Ranters was a separate band. Jack's Barn dance programme on the radio dates back to the 40s I think, and was outside the folk dance revival. It is certainly something worthy of further investigation. There was a strong folk dance club in St Helens, and there was a Greesleeves Band (separate from the morris team in london)
