5/10/1775: Battle of Ft Ticonderoga, NY; the 1st agressive US act (won by Col.
Ethan Allen with his evolved "committee of safety" plus Col. Ben Arnold et al.)
The fate of the Colonies was mearly a side issue to the Vermont Wars of
Independence against New York & New Hampshire.

        Let Clinton and Ten Broek, with bribes in their hands,
        Still seek to divide us and parcel our lands;
        We've coats for our traitors whoever they are;
        The warp is of feathers—the filling of tar.

        "The Song of the Vermonters" by John Greenleaf Whittier; The New Green
Mountain Songster
, HH Flanders, etc., 1939 & 1966. The song is well
established in tradition in Vermont. This "Clinton" is probably NY Governor
George Clinton, twice vice-president & DeWitt's father. (The fort was
abandoned to British forces July 6, 1777)
