Thread Name: Fingerpicking Patterns
Subject: RE: Fingerpicking Patterns
Kaleea just threw this thread into information overload mode--it will take you a good long while to make sense out of what she said(though it's all good)--don't try to process it all at once.
For starters, it takes a good long while to learn to Travis pick--it generally takes longer to get the basic thumb movement down than it takes for a baby to walk--

Anyway, the important thing to understand about fingerpicking, as used in all the different "Folk" styles of accompaniment, is that, besides simply providing chords, it provides a rhythm pattern to sing, play, or dance over. The rhythm pattern is what gives each style it's individual sound.

The Gipsy Kings, Doc Watson, Blind Blake, and Earl Klugh all fingerpick(in fact, it occurs to me that they all often used a similar thumb/index finger movement)--but they all play different rhythms, and had completely different sounds--

The first thing for you to do is to pick out some recordings that you like and listen to them til you get the feel of the rhythm--then get the chords and play them til you have them down(often, it is enough to play a simple downstroke for each count, using your thumb or index finger)--

After you've got the chords down, then you can start working with the fingerpicking patterns--and you can start asking questions that will get you answers that you can use, but don't confuse.
