Two things here:

First, male and female are not genders, they're sexes. Sex is a quality possessed by most living organisms.

Masculine and feminine are genders. Gender is a quality possessed by nouns in some languages.

The confusion arises because many semi-literate people use the word 'sex' as a synonym or euphemism for 'sexual intercourse' and, having used up (!!) that word for a different meaning, need to steal the perfectly good word 'gender' from its grammatical use.

It seems to be mostly the PC brigade that do this. It does annoy me!
