Mr. Happy, as each person is unique, finding the diet that works for your health at your stage in life may take some fine tuning. You may have to try different strategies before you find the one that works for you. Cutting down on fat may not work. You may just need to be eating the right kinds of fat and cutting out sugar instead. When I went through menopause, everything about my body seemed to change. In the past, I was either normal weight or too thin for most of my life. Menopause changed that. Men's bodies have changes too, just not as obvious as it is for us women. I have been trying for five years to find the right type of diet to make me healthy. In the process, I finally have come to treatment for insulin resistance. If your cells develop insulin resistance, (you don't have the insulin receoptors that you had when younger) then the glucose in your food will become fat rather than fuel. I exercise and eat a diet rich in green leafy vegetables. I eat only lean meats (turkey and chicken) and avoid processed carbohydrate foods like soda, cookies, etc. It is still a struggle. I take supplements that are supposed to help change the insulin resistance to increase the number of insulin receptors.
Just cutting down on calories may cause more harm than good, as fasting or crash dieting can make your ability to burn fuel less efficient. I hope your doctor can help you find what your particular body needs to eat and to avoid. You need good fats. Don't cut all fats out of your diet.
