Thread Name: know any Greek Canadian Chinese folkies?
Subject: RE: know any Greek Canadian Chinese folkies?
It was a fascinating programme. The only press review I've seen was a bit sniffy about his songs, all foreign songs translated literally seem a bit odd! They seemed to go down well in China to large and street audiences alike. He has to be praised for overcoming a stutter and OCD to get a demanding job, learn a difficult language and go for his dream. His father clearly had put him down all his life, dismissing him as a fantasist stuck in his teens. I guess anyone who dreams of a music career is guilty of that! Ma and grandma thought a 40 year old should give up music and marry a nice Greek (and certainly NOT Chinese!) girl. OK, he didn't get to perform at the Olympics but he then settled for a more realisable role: he was a volunteer at the Olym, ics translating for the Chinese team (and playing and singing whenever he could). I loved his fellow volunteers singing (and Greek dancing!!!)on the 'bus taking them from the stadium to the Olympic village. If they make a film of him, Rowan Atkinson is a dead ringer!
