I think that this song, and others like it, should be preserved. They are part of history and, like it or not, part of German history. Should we ban "Garryowen" because the 7th Cavalry band played it as Custer's troops wiped out a village on the Washita? "Marching Through Georgia?"
"Lili Marlene?" "Dixie," one of Abe Lincoln's favorite songs, is rarely played. "The International?" "Die Gendanken Sind Frei?" "Guantanemera?" "Meadowlands?" "Viva La Quince Brigada?" "Ballad of the Green Berets?" The original of "God Save The King?"

Changing times do not obviate the need to preserve both the good and the bad. It's not necessary to sing this song (God, I certainly hope not!). But as a librarian and as an admittedly amateur historian, I would hate like hell to see this -- or the "Horst Wessel Lieder" -- fall prey to either "The Victors Write The History" or political correctness. Remember too what George Santayana said about learning from history....

(And while we're at it, let's not forget that during the 20th Century the German Army invaded the Netherlands and Belgium twice, not once.)
