Alternatively, it may be referring to "Concert Pitch", that hubbub of sound created by Orchestras as they all tune their "A" above middle C to 440Hz. Perhaps the musicians took particular trouble to tune their instruments to this (supposedly) universal standard rather than to what their leader considered to be an in tune guitar (or whatever he/she was playing).
