DougR, sometime try prolonged sleep deprivation and/or being taped in an awkward position for hours and see whether you think you've been tortured.

I thought I must have had a stroke or a brain tumor once; a frightening experience to have thoughts going through my head that were not mine and to read what I knew was English but could not understand any of the words. It turned out to be sleep deprivation. And not a great dramatic six-days awake, just a slight deficiency each night for a time.

Sitting in an airplane for an hour is painful for me; makes it hard for me to straighten up and walk, and that's not being kept immobile.

And Rumsfeld, saying that 4 hours wasn't long to stand: I used to work standing at a tall desk all day, like Rummy, but I wasn't standing still at attention; it's not uncommon for soldiers to pass out on parade grounds when standing braced.

There are a lot of things that hurt like hell but don't leave evidence of bodily harm. Careful electroshock, beating with a big phonebook or the old-fashioned rubber hose.
Pressure on nerves of the head, limbs or body -- like the "crazybone." Useful for breaking a hold a bad guy has on you, but, like shooting, evil if used on anything but self-defense.
And there's threatening the victim's family.

American's are not supposed to do stuff like that.

But get somebody to try some of that on you, doug: you might like it.
