CBC Article about DEET concerns.
Organic is better. Read this and this information.
Here's the logic behind the not using DEET or broadcast spraying pesticides against mosquitoes.
The same idiots who want to spray the whole world and kill the beneficial bugs along with the mosquitoes are the ones who are pushing DEET.

DEET. You have to look hard to get past all of the commercial pushers of DEET at the top of the page of search results.
In the table at the above link: can be harmful to humans:
Measured toxicity
The Working Group has decided that there are sufficient toxicity data on the substance and/or its degradation products (e.g. hydrolysis) in order to classify or not classify.
The subst. has been considered in order to see if it is readily degradable or not according to existing criteria. Sufficient data may not always have been precented and the substance is in those cases by default considered as not readily degradable.
The substance has been considered in order to see if it is bioaccumulative or not according to existing criteria. The substance is considered as potentially bioaccumulative if log POW >= 3.0 (unless the experimentally determined BCF <= 100).
