Thread Name: Obit: Sad News - Frank Harte (June 2005)
Subject: RE: Sad News - Frank Harte
Just heard the news.
Those who knew Frank will realise what a treasure he was. Holder of a vast repertoire of songs and their backgrounds, he shared that wealth with a generosity of spirit that not many achieve, in my experience. As a result, he inspired a whole generation of singers to "stand up there and sing the story" - including myself.
My first encounter with Frank´s recordings was way back in the early seventies. I was visiting an old student colleague of mine in Einhoven in Holland, of all places. He played two LP´s (remember them?) which had a huge impact on me. One was the Watersons "Frost and Fire"´- the other was Frank´s "Through Dublin City". On one level my reaction was "Jeez! If he can get way with singing like that, sure I´ll have a go!". More accurately, of course, I immediately recognised Frank´s ability to get to the heart (sorry, Frank!) of a song - and fire that heart right back out to the listener.
I´m so sad to be sitting here in Granada, unable to pay proper respects to a friend and a man I´ve admired for so many years. The post-burial session will be something else!
