ring finger at 3rd fret of low E string
index finger on 2nd fret of A string
thumb on 3rd fret of high E

Wanna pick up that D note from the third fret of the B string?
Just slide your thumb on over a little farther.

For those of us who are "forward impaired", playing "backwards" is often much easier.
