Though this was probably intended to be an allegory for the Christ-child's birth, it seems appropriate for Solstice, as it is the time which reminds us, after the longest night of the year, that Spring is coming:

The Rose-Tree

Michael Praetorius
English version by Abbie Farwell Brown

There is a Rose-Tree blooming
In winter's frost and cold
To tell how Spring is coming,
With joy for young and old.

Chorus:

It is the Rose of Love,
No cruel wind can wither,
No tempest can remove.

Lo, any life that shivers
May shelter 'neath the Tree,
Each tender petal quivers,
With glowing mystery.

Chorus:

And 'mid the sweetness curled
A golden heart is hidden,
Dear treasure of the world!
