Sonnet 22/06/05                               MXIV

How shall I call you: Love, dear friend, sweet muse?
I would have you as all. But, will you let
My hopes be real, or must you love refuse?
Can I know truth, and not knowing regret?
How shall I hold you, from so far? I long
To keep you close, but should my arms restrain
Even your tears? Would it not still be wrong
To change you in trying to dreams obtain?
How shall I please you, when my thoughts are chill
And words reflect the fears that darken dreams?
What can I offer, not knowing your will,
That might earn at least smile for all my schemes?
You are all heart now needs, but dare I try
To ask for what I fear you will deny?
