When Heath lost the election to Labour and hung on in Downing Street, we actually thought he was planning a military coup. Rumours of the sort had been rife (some of them true, it seems) but Heath was, as it turned out, innocent. We thought him a fascist at the time. We, too, were innocents in that respect. When Margaret Thatcher appeared, we discovered who the fascists really were.
