The obit I read today said he commanded a company of the Royal Winnipeg Rifles in the assault on Juno Beach. The RWR were in the first wave. If so, he must have been one of the last remaining D-Day infantry company commanders. If he spent the rest of the war as a pilot observer, however, it seems more likely that he was a gunner. I think I knew that he had served in the war, but I didn't know that he had seen the elephant from such a short distance.
