Yeah. Remember what happened to Commonwealth troops in Word War I? They were sent by their generals in human wave attacks against entrenched German and Turkish machine guns, and they died like flies. RAF pilots were denied the use of parachutes (easily available to observation balloon personnel), because it was felt that it might encourage the pilots to "prematurely abandon valuable equipment" (burning airplanes). The German pilots used parachutes from about the mid-point in the war. Being outnumbered, they could not afford the luxury of burning up too many pilots to supposedly save airplanes which were in fact, unsaveable.

You can build an airplane in a couple of days on a good production line. It takes 3 to 5 years to train a decent fighter pilot. And an airplane does not have a family.
