Paul Oliver's "The Story Of The Blues" {Radnor, PA; Chilton Book Company, 1975, p. 9} Oliver notes that the song was heard by Charlotte Forten {a well to do African American from the North who volunteered during the Civil War to teach African Americans in the Gullah Islands.
