I encountered a similar problem with a Pete Seeger song many moons back. It was ascribed to Melanie (the female singer) on many sites. Eventually, I located a reference to the liner notes of an album she did and in the notes was the statement that Pete Seeger had indeed written the song. However, lots of sites had her listed as the author. Nope. She sung it; she didn't write it.
