Happy Birthday!
Herb Hoover
engineer, humanitarian, and 31st president,
was born 8/10/1874
(died 1964)
Hoover had the misfortune of serving as US President 1929-1933, and thus has been unfairly blamed for getting the country into the world wide Great Depression. Folk singers have done their share to help the myth-making process along.
Look here, Mr. Hoover, and see what you done,
You went off a-fishin', let the country go to ruin,
Now he's gone --- doghide! --- I'm glad he's gone.
"White House Blues," Words: ?, Music: traditional, Via Bob Baker
and later, the New Lost City Ramblers.
ALSO:
We've Hooverized on butter,
For milk we've only water,
And I haven't seen a steak in many a day.
For pies and cakes and jellies,
We substitute sow bellies,
For which we work these county roads each day.
"Beans, Bacon And Gravy," Words: ?, Music: "Jesse James," Via Cisco Houston
