Thread Name: BS: Is trash rubbish?
Subject: RE: BS: Is trash rubbish?
Okay..thanks Moo..I think I'm getting it..

And I did notice that jOhn from Hull answered his question with an emphatic NO..

so leaving that aside, how about I muddy the water a bit more
and introduce a couple other meanings of 'trash'...

In African American culture and among those influenced by that culture, "talkin trash" can mean boasting to impress someone {say a guy tryin to "hit on" meaning "get next to" a girl he's interested in}.

Also people of the same gender can talk trash to each other, boasting about their physical and material accomplishments.
In that context it's very much like bein jive and talkin jive {this definition of jive is not the older jazz one of talkin hip}.

But "talkin trash" can also mean "signifyin". "Signifyin" is an African American tradition of ritualistic insult exchanges among two people {usually males] that is also called "playin the dozens", "cappin", "dissin" and various other regional terms.

I should mention that the rapper Timbaland had [what I would consider to be} an X rated song called "Talkin Trash".
I'm sure that there have probably been Blues songs and others with that title..

So all this to say that I guess this "Is trash/rubbish" question depends on who you ask and where and when.

Positive vibrations,

Azizi
